Growing up in Texas Margaret Lewis started her first band, The Thunderbolts, in high school. By 1958 she had ventured to Shreveport, Louisiana and landed a gig as a regular on the hugely popular hit radio show The Louisiana Hayride. The talented teen was soon taken under the wing of music industry pioneer Myra Smith, who quickly signed her to her Ram Records label. Margaret wrote and recorded with Myra releasing many singles on the label throughout the late 50s and early 60s. She toured extensively in support of her records, and even added future guitar legend/Blues great Johnny Winter to her band.

Margaret also toured with Dale Hawkins and sang backups on many Chess Records releases. In 1958 she penned her first hit “La-Do-Dada” with Dale. By 1963 Margaret had inked with Capitol Records and released a string of singles for the label. By 1967 she relocated to Nashville with her longtime mentor and songwriting partner Mira Smith. The duo inked with music impresario Shelby Singleton and cranked out hits for the likes of Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner, Connie Francis, Jeannie C. Reilly, Ella Washington, Skeeter Davis, Freddy Fender, and Delaney & Bonnie to name a few. From 1969 – 1975 her song, “Reconsider Me”, was covered by Ray Pillow, Johnny Adams, Narvel Felts, and Ray Wesley Ryles and broke the Top 40 each time. She continued to write, perform and record into the 1990s.

The late Margaret Lewis is a true legend in Rockabilly, Country, and R&B music. Fervor Records is proud to be home to much of her back catalog.
