Gypsy Mitchell

Gypsy-Mitchell

Charles Ray “Gypsy” Mitchell was born in Dallas, TX, in 1952. At the age of 17, he teamed up with brothers Rev. Gean West and Rev. Tommie West to create The Relatives, a groundbreaking gospel funk band. Gypsy contributed as a co-writer, arranger, and guitarist for the group’s debut singles: “Speak to Me” b/w “Walking On” (Lewis Records) and “Don’t Let Me Fall” b/w “Rap On” (Hosanna Records). His standout guitar style, which he credits to open tunings, effects pedals, and influences from legends like Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, and Cal Valentine, became a defining feature of his sound. Following his stint with The Relatives, Gypsy performed alongside R&B and funk icons such as Buddy Ace, Johnnie Taylor, The Bar-Kays, and Joe Simon.

Gypsy stepped away from music for a time but experienced a vivid dream featuring the late Rev. Gean West, which reignited his passion. Inspired, he set out to record a collection of deeply personal compositions that had remained unwritten until then. Fervor Records is honored to showcase many of these remarkable works.
