In 1969, Iowa guitarist Billylee Janey formed the hard rock power trio Truth. The threesome drew inspiration from the likes of Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, blending blues, psychedelic rock, and early proto-metal influences.
With Janey’s mind-blowing guitar work, the band’s electrifying performances, and relentless touring, they developed a devoted following throughout the Midwest. However, with the increased notoriety came a serious legal issue: a Mobile, AL, band had rights to the name Truth. The trio simply rebranded as Truth & Janey and continued on.
In 1972, they released their first single, “Under My Thumb” b/w “Midnight Horseman,” on the Sound Communication label. In 1973, they followed with the single, “Straight Eight Pontiac” b/w “Around and Around” on Driving Wheel Records. The group was now sharing stages with the likes of Leslie West, Blue Öyster Cult, and Savoy Brown. In 1976, they released the long-awaited, and critically acclaimed LP, “No Rest for the Wicked,” on the Montross Records label.
Today, “No Rest for the Wicked” is a coveted cult classic. The original vinyl sells for thousands, and the album has been released by multiple reissue labels internationally. The band’s raw, unfiltered sound has endured for decades, earning them induction into the Iowa Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Fervor Records is now the permanent home to the band’s back catalog. We are proud to continue to perpetuate Truth & Janey’s incredible slice of American rock ‘n’ roll history.
