UKAŠE

Canadian alternative outfit UKASE formed in 1985. The band was fronted by three women, Roze White (lead vocals), Christine deVeber (guitar/vocals), and Dianne McPherson (guitar/vocals), and rounded out by a male rhythm section Darryl Vachon (bass), and Steve Vachon (drums). In their early days, UKASE played mostly covers but collaborating on original material was a natural progression. The band’s unique vocal style, effective layering of melodies, and raw guitar work set UKASE apart from the rest of the London, Ontario music scene. They soon gathered a strong local following and began showcasing in Toronto and Montreal. These gigs led to opening slots for headliners including Simple Minds. Their success caught the attention of the The London Free Press and The Montreal Gazette, where the band’s identifiable sound received rave reviews. In 1986 they won the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology’s Soundstage Contest; this landed UKASE in the studio where they recorded their single “The Rain b/w Runaway” released on Gargoyle Music. Fervor Records is now home to the UKASE catalog!
