The Spiffs
The Spiffs quickly gained notoriety for their wild antics both on stage and off. The boys were frequently seen on campus at Arizona State University wearing only trash bags to promote their gigs. Their live show included blazing chainsaws, lots of fan interaction in the mosh pit, and plenty of Punk irreverence towards the audience. The band and roadies resided in the “Spiff Dome,” which soon turned into a flophouse for various fans, groupies, and notorious after-parties.
The boys relentless hustle and outside the box marketing quickly increased their club draw. So much so that Clyde Shields, owner of the legendary Phoenix venue The Mason Jar, financed the band’s EP “Don’t Waste Your Money On This Garbage.” Tower Records Tempe completely ‘blacked out’ the windows with Spiffs posters to promote the release. The record received strong regional airplay, and the song “Little Teaser” was included on FM Rock powerhouse 98 KUPD’s compilation “Damn Straight.” At a concert promoting the KUPD record, The Spiffs’ stage antics incited the crowd of 6000 Hard Rock fans to riot. The PA was killed mid-song when fights broke out while concert goers hurled objects at the band.
The Spiffs garnered their fare share of attention from the press, fans, radio stations and clubs but they ultimately disbanded in 1981. Fervor Records has acquired the band’s catalog and is proud to offer up the official re-issue of The Spiffs’ sole effort “Don’t Waste Your Money On This Garbage.”
