In 1990, five veterans of the Phoenix music scene formed the heavy goth-rock-infused band Bliss. The quintet quickly became a powerhouse in the Valley of the Sun thanks to its aggressive, emotional sound. Bliss featured frontman Bil Yanok (The Nervous, Mighty Sphincter, 24HR WORLD) on lead vocals and keyboards, Tony Karaba (Rabid Rabbit, Mighty Sphincter) on bass, Rich Contandino (Jagged Rocks on the Perimeter, Undertow) on drums, Johnny Belluzi (Soothsayer, Our Neighbors Suck, 24HR WORLD) on guitar, and, rounding out the five-piece, Harry McCaleb (Algebra Ranch, Undertow) on guitar. While the band’s tenure was short-lived, their impactful recordings live on as a testament to the goth-metal-influenced sound of the early-’90s Phoenix music scene.
