Singer, songwriter, arranger, bandleader, multi-instrumentalist, producer, A&R man, and label executive, Connie Conway was an unstoppable musical force in the burgeoning 1950s Phoenix, AZ, music scene. In June 1955, Connie, along with longtime musical colleagues Paul Humlee, James Wilcox, and George Welch, founded Music Counselors, Inc., dba MCI Records. The new firm operated out of Floyd Ramsey’s premier Arizona facility, Ramsey’s Recording Studio.
Conway worked tirelessly, producing jingles with his Music Counselors, Inc., crew, writing songs prolifically with his wife, Norma, and producing the region’s top talent. In 1956, just a year after launching MCI, he struck gold. MCI Records released “The Fool” by Sanford Clark, which became Arizona’s first top-10 hit.
Connie’s velvety smooth voice, paired with his masterful arrangement and trumpet skills, kept him busy on the live performance circuit. He gigged relentlessly, from his trio to his 11-piece orchestra, at the area’s top resorts and nightclubs. He also served as an A&R man for REV Records, was under contract with Dot Records in Hollywood, and saw his songs, arrangements, and productions land on labels including Capitol, Brent, Dot, Gregmark, Jaime, Mascot, Porter, Quality, REV, Smash, Time, Todd, and Trey.
MCI was sold to Floyd Ramsey and later purchased by John P. Dixon in 2006. Sadly, Connie Conway passed away in 1975 at age 52. However, we are proud to work with Mr. Dixon to perpetuate his incredible musical legacy.
