In the late 1990s, childhood friends Stuart Smith and Don Brosnan migrated from Tucson, Arizona, to London, England, and formed Super J Lounge. The duo enlisted Londoners Tim Hughes and Sten Stenhouse to round out their newly minted quartet. In 1997, Super J issued their first single, “Sorry” b/w “Home,” on the UK indie label Fierce Panda Records, well known for their work with acts including Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, and Placebo. Fierce Panda followed up with the band’s 1998 single, “Billboard” b/w “Roll.”
Super J Lounge’s blend of Americana, electronica, indie, krautrock, and psych created a distinctive sound, drawing comparisons to artists ranging from Galaxie 500 to Kraftwerk to Sparklehorse and Spacemen 3. In 2000, their first full-length album was issued on the band’s imprint, Pima County Records. That same year, the UK label Blue Dog released the limited-edition 7″ single “Wire & Wheels” b/w “Sorry” as part of their Blue Dog Singles Club series.
Unrestrained by boundless creativity, Super J Lounge created two unique and eclectic albums, which have found a home at Fervor Records.
